The Legend of San Siro: Why Milan’s Soccer Stadium Is So Famous

The soccer stadium in Milan is shared by the city’s two major clubs:

  • AC Milan and
  • Inter Milan

With a capacity of 80,000, the stadium isn’t exactly modern—it’s actually getting a bit long in the tooth. That’s one of the reasons both soccer clubs are planning to build a new stadium.

But at the same time, that is exactly what sets the arena apart: the fact that it stands out visually and architecturally from many stadiums around the world and has its own unique character—it simply doesn’t look like many other stadiums.

San Siro Stadium Tour Milan: Visit the Temple of Soccer

As long as the stadium still exists, soccer fans vacationing in Milan should definitely include a guided tour of San Siro Stadium in their sightseeing itinerary!

Starting at approximately €36, you can take a guided tour of San Siro Stadium, including the players’ locker rooms, the tunnel, the sidelines, the press room, and the San Siro Museum.

Is the San Siro Stadium Tour included in the Milan Pass?

No, to the best of our knowledge, the stadium tour in Milan is not included in the City Pass.

This means that anyone who wants to tour the stadium must purchase a separate ticket for the tour.

However, the City Pass is worth it for many of the city’s attractions:

Stadium Name

The stadium is known by two names, which can sometimes lead to confusion. It was originally called “San Siro” because it is located in the Milan neighborhood of the same name.

In 1980, it was officially renamed “Stadio Giuseppe Meazza” in honor of the legendary Italian soccer player who played for both Inter and AC Milan and won the World Cup twice (1934 and 1938).

Interestingly, AC Milan fans still prefer the name “San Siro,” while Inter fans more often use “Giuseppe Meazza.” Officially, the full name is “Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in San Siro.”

History of the Stadium

San Siro originally opened in 1926 as the home stadium of AC Milan, with a capacity of approximately 35,000 spectators at the time. In the 1930s, the City of Milan purchased the stadium, and in 1947, Inter Milan (then known as FC Internazionale) also moved in, meaning that the two city rivals share the arena.

Over the decades, the stadium has been renovated and expanded several times, with major renovations for the 1990 World Cup, during which the distinctive towers and roof were added.

With a capacity of around 80,000, it is Italy’s largest soccer stadium and has witnessed numerous historic soccer moments, including several European Cup/Champions League finals.

The Future of the Stadium

The future of San Siro has been a controversial topic for several years. Both AC Milan and Inter Milan have presented plans for a new, more modern stadium to be built next to the existing San Siro, after which the old stadium would be partially demolished.

However, this project, known as “Nuovo Stadio Milano“, has met with significant resistance from fans and local authorities due to the historical and cultural value of San Siro. The Italian heritage protection authority placed parts of the stadium under protection in the summer of 2023, which—at least for now—prevents its complete demolition.

What visitors say

On the website of the well-known sightseeing ticket portal (GetYourGuide), the stadium tour in Milan has already garnered over 3,000 individual reviews from visitors. With a rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars, the tour has received very positive feedback overall.

We have included two reviews from visitors:
“The tour was great. The wait times were less than 10 minutes, which was totally fine. You get 20 minutes in the museum, which is definitely worth it. After that, there’s a tour of the two locker rooms, the players’ tunnel, and the sidelines. There’s plenty of time for photos and taking it all in.” – Lennart

“Great stadium, but I think the museum is a bit outdated. Still, 100%” – Jens

Where is the meeting point for the San Siro Stadium Tour?

The meeting point for the tour is at the ticket booth at Gate 8. The meeting point is shown on the map below:
